Emirates Poules d’Essai des Poulains et des Pouliches – Policy of Truth, one of the favourites of this 2021 edition

On the 16th May, ParisLongchamp will host the Emirates Poules d’Essai des Poulains and Pouliches (the French 2000 and 1000 Guineas). Two races over 1,600 meters (a mile) reserved for 3-year-olds: one for thoroughbred colts and one for fillies. Sponsored by Emirates, these two races both hold Group 1 status – the highest level of international horseracing.
This year, the stand-out story comes from Normandy, more precisely, from the French stud, the Haras du Logis Saint-Germain. This racing operation, which is owned by French industrial entrepreneur Olivier Carli (see below), is not one of the « giants » of the international racing scene, but a boutique operation. However, this year they have one of the favourites of the Emirates Poule d’Essai des Poulains: Policy of Truth.
This is even more exceptional for the stud, as they in fact won the 2020 running of the Emirates Poule d’Essai des Pouliches with the filly Dream and Do! Just like Dream and Do, Policy of Truth is by the leading French stallion: Siyouni, who belongs to His Highness the Aga Khan.
Policy of Truth is trained by the Swedish duo of Pia and Joakim Brandt, a married couple who have been training together in Chantilly for more than a dozen years. On the 18th  of April, he won the Prix La Force, a Group 3 race which is one of the main preparatory races for the Emirates Poule d’Essai des Poulains. Winners of the Prix La Force also won the Poule d’Essai in 2017 and 2019.

A historic stud given a new life in 2008
The Haras du Logis Saint-Germain was bought by Olivier Carli, originally a showjumping enthusiast, in 2008. Through a meeting with Claude Lambert, the director of Logis Saint-Germain at the time, Olivier Carli, an entrepreneur in medical innovation, took the decision to invest in racehorses. Logis Saint-Germain is situated at Putot-en-Auge, in the Calvados region of Normandy, and the beating heart of thoroughbred breeding in France. The stud was established in 1946 by the Baroness of Rance, before passing under the ownership of Werner Wolf in 1984. The major development of this stud has come under the leadership of Olivier Carli, who has sent the stud in a more commercial direction: the stud now stands two stallions, French Fifteen (sire of Group 1 winner French King, born and raised at Logis Saint-Germain), and the three-time Group 1 miler Charm Spirit. Olivier Carli’s own broodmares are situated on the stud, and they also board mares belonging to outside clients. Each year, they consign yearlings* at the Arqana** Sales.
For just €30,000…
Like any thoroughbred breeder, Olivier Carli seeks to improve his breeding stock by purchasing racehorses ultimately intended for breeding. This was the case with Venetias Dream, who went on to produce Dream and Do… and so Dream and Do was born at Haras du Logis Saint-Germain.
Policy of Truth, however, was not born at the stud. He was bought as a yearling by Olivier Carli for €30,000 (a very reasonable amount) at the Arqana October Yearling Sale. Olivier Carli is co-owner of the colt with his trainers Pia and Joakim Brandt.
Haras du Logis Saint-Germain sponsors one of the biggest races during the celebrated Deauville racing festival each year: the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano, a Group 2 race which can act a springboard for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
* Yearlings: horses aged 1 year old
** Arqana is the largest French thoroughbred auction house, based in Deauville
