Abu Dhabi Poules d’Essai weekend at Deauville:
Unveiling of champions!
Launch of Season 2 of the Epiqe Series

A magnificent 4-day weekend!

On Thursday 11 May 2017, horses that are entered in the Breeze Up sale, which takes place on Friday 12 May in the Arqana Sales Ring, will gallop on the track at the Deauville racecourse.

Following the Breeze Up sale, the Deauville racecourse will become the centre point for two key events in the racing calendar: the Abu Dhabi Poule d’Essai des Pouliches on 13 May and the Abu Dhabi Poule d’Essai des Poulains on 14 May.

These very much anticipated events mark the start of the 2017 Epiqe Series, which includes the best horseraces of the season.

The best three-year-old milers at Deauville

As the reopening of the Longchamp racecourse in Paris is scheduled for 2018, the 2017 edition of the Abu Dhabi Poules d’Essai des Poulains and the Abu Dhabi Poules d’Essai des Pouliches returns to Deauville!

These two races are extremely important as they are “classic” events: these races anoint the best three-year-old colt and the best three-year-old filly over the mile. The three-year-old season is the most important year in the life of a thoroughbred, which is the name of the breed that runs in these races.

The two “Poules”, as they are known, are run over a straight course, which is different to Longchamp, where they are run over a track that includes a bend. The Deauville-La Touques racecourse has in fact a very long straight where the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard – Jacques Le Marois, one of the world’s best races, is run during the month of August.

La Cressonnière, the 2016 revelation of a champion filly

The 2016 edition of the Poules d’Essai des Pouliches saw the breath-taking performance of the Jean-Claude Rouget trained La Cressonnière. Ridden by Cristian Demuro, the winning filly recorded a faster time than the colts in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains, before going on to more glory. In fact, a few weeks later, this amazing filly (see photo below) went on to win the prestigious Prix de Diane Longines at Chantilly.

Entertainment for everybody!

A new partner for a racing weekend

France Galop and Arqana, in association with the AFAC, have signed a partnership deal with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, an organization dedicated to promoting sport and high-level competition, for the Poule d’Essai weekend, which takes place at Deauville in mid-May.

Increase of prize-money for the Poules d’Essai

Prize-money for the Poules d’Essai has been increased to €600 000 and €500 000. The two main events of the weekend will be known as the Abu Dhabi Poule d’Essai des Poulains and the Abu Dhabi Poule d’Essai des Pouliches.

As part of the partnership, the total prize-money for each of these events has been increased to a total of €600 000 in the colt’s race (€342.840 to the winner) and €500 000 in the filly’s race (€285.700 to the winner).

It is important to note that this sum will be further increased by a premium of 63% should the winning colt or winning filly qualify for the owner’s premium, which is open to horses born and bred in France or horses that are assimilated French bred.

Therefore, if the winner qualifies for the owner’s premium, the total first prize-money for the Abu Dhabi Sports Council Poule d’Essai des Poulains would be €558.82, while the winner of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council Poule d’Essai des Pouliches would go home with €465.691 (prize-money and premium).

Return of the Epiqe Series!

EpiqƎ Series is the combination of the best horseraces in France. The Poules d’Essai at Deauville launch Series 2 of this competition, which includes the best flat races in the French calendar. These races are broadcast live in a special 45-minute program by LCI, which is Group TF1’s dedicated news channel.

Each of these races attracts the best jockeys who are competing for a maximum of points. In 2016, Maxime Guyon was the inaugural winner of the Epiqe Series. Who will it be in 2017?
